As some of you well know, the hugely successful Uncanny X-Men concluded last October with #544 after the "Schism/Fear Itself" storyline.
The book has recently been relaunched as Uncanny X-Men #1, a brand-new ongoing featuring Cyclops' X-Men. Written by Kieron Gillen and penciled by Carlos Pacheco, everything is set up beautifully in this first issue. We are introduced to San Francisco and Utopia island, where the X-Men have taken up residence. The present status quo and everything we need to know are explained. This is the aftermath of the Schism event and there are presently two teams of X-Men now. Cyclops' team in San Francisco and Wolverine's team in Westchester, New York.
What we see here is literally out of this world. It is the X-Men with all the big guns in the roster, what Cyclops calls his 'Extinction Team'. This group "could stare gods in the eye and make them blink." I would have to agree. Take a look at who's in it: Magneto, Storm, Colossus (with Juggernaut powers), Magik, Namor, Emma Frost, Hope, and Danger. In terms of power levels, strength, and psionic abilities, this group has it all. And that is the way Cyclops wants it. He wants to let the world know that the X-Men are Earth's mightiest heroes (taking a shot at the Avengers?). He also wants the world to be scared of mutants and make oppressors think twice before mistreating one of their kind. This is Cyclops taking charge and it couldn't be more clear.
The action gets going right away as Mr. Sinister messes with the Dreaming Celestial standing right in the city and the X-Men face their first big challenge. This is really taking things over the top. A Celestial has always been something for the Avengers or Silver Surfer to deal with. I can't help but smile how the X-Men are being put against one now, and they have a fighting chance. Sinister has always been a mysterious villain with an obsession on the Summers family. He's causing chaos just to get on Cyclops' nerves. Considering the amount of damage already done and the X-Men only barely able to keep things together, I'd have to say it's scary to think what Sinister is truly capable of doing.
Overall, I am very impressed about the ambitiousness of this new X-Men. I like how Cyclops is written and I am excited to see how far this team is able to go. The possibilities are limitless. Artwise, the book is beautiful. We get a more thorough explanation of what this team's about in the back in Scott's "Letter to Humanity." There is also a nice org chart of the team and sub-teams of X-Men under Cyclops' command. This issue is a nice all in one package to start everything off.
