So The Amazing Spider-Date finally hit stores this week. I'm glad I remembered to get a copy.SPOILERS BELOW
Some issues ago, Ms. Marvel had promised to go out with Spider-Man. This issue is where she takes him up on that offer. We start with our two heroes teaming up to capture a high tech bank robber. They take care of that quick and later switch to their civvies for the actual date. This is where the fun is supposed to begin. For those not up to date, these two know each other's secret identity already as they're teammates in the New Avengers.
They go to a nice restaurant. Carol is treating as Peter is short on money as usual. What happens is they have nothing to talk about. Aside from chatting a bit about superhero stuff, that was it. Peter makes a joke about how he can't shut up when with the team, but it's now just the two of them and he can't say a thing. It's a bit funny, but this is their first date so..
Things are interrupted when two rouge HAMMER agents crash into the restaurant thinking they can capture Ms. Marvel. They get pounded of course. Later, Carol and Peter head off somewhere else to buy chili dogs and eat them at a rooftop that overlooks the city. The End.
This was a disappointing issue overall. I expected more especially since Marvel hyped this up. The writing seemed lazy and it was all done quick. I like to think this was at least a special moment for both characters.
What makes things worse is the art in the last few pages when they switched artists. They were just ugly and out of place. A glaring stain in this book. How can Marvel settle for that kind of art especially in the end?
I would love to see these two continue dating. They're both single, attractive, and look good together. The way the issue ends is open-ended. It wasn't a bad date, but it wasn't good either. I hope they follow up on this in the future.
